Set Refueling and Replenishment Detail.    Received 260,526 gallons of NSFO from USS NEOSHO (AO-143).   HEITKEMPER,  W.L., BM1,  received an avulsion on right hand and puncture of the right eyelid; not due to own misconduct.   1230 Sighted Punta Del Sabinal Light bearing 012, range 13 miles.  


October 3, 1962

Steaming as before.   1747 USS WALDO COUNTY (LST 1163) joined the formation and assumed the Guide.    2036 Sighted PTA Anciola Light, bearing 049, 22 miles.


October 4, 1962

0747 Anchored in Berth 6, Pollensa Bay, Majorca, Baliaric Islands, in 15 fathoms of water, sand bottom, with 60 fathoms of chain out to the port anchor.   SOPA is CTF 61 in USS CAMBIA (APA-36).    0800 The Commanding Officer, USS CASA GRANDE (LSD-13), with his Executive Officer and party came aboard.  1100 The Commanding Officer, USS CASA GRANDE (LSD-13), with his Executive Officer and party left the ship.    1100 Commander, Amphibious Squadron Four relieved Commander, Amphibous Squadron Six as Commander, Task Force 61 on board USS FREMONT (APA-44).

2148 USS TELFAIR (APA 210) got underway and stood out of anchorage.   2210 USS FREMONT (APA-44) with CTF 61 embarked, got underway and stood out of anchorage.  2216 Lighted fires under Number Two Boiler.    2240 Stationed the Special Sea Detail.    2308 Underway from Pollensa Bay, Majorca,  Balearic Islands to Alcudia Bay,  Majorca,  Balearic Islands, Captain at the conn,  Navigator on the bridge.

0056 C/c and commenced maneuvering at various courses and speeds to designated PCV Anchorage, Alcudia Bay, Majorca, Balearic Islands.   0125 Anchored in 10 fathoms of water iwth 60 fathoms of chain to the port anchor. SOPA is CTF 61 in USS FREMONT (APA-44).

0730 Commenced ballasting.    0845 Commenced debarkation of boats in the well.   0916 Completed ballasting.    All boats clear. CIC functioning as PCV Boat Control for Red Beach.    1045 Exercise completed.   Commenced deballasting.   1124 Began troop embarkation from boats alongside wing walls.    1143 Ceased deballasting  -  water at the sill.

Condition of Readiness IV and Material Condition YOKE (Modified) are set.   Engineering in Condition of Readiness III.

08-12   Steaming as before.   0810 Anchored in Anchorage BRAVO, Golfe de Juan, France in 10 fathoms of water, mud bottom, with 60 fathoms of chain out to the Starboard Anchor on the following bearings:  Cape Antibes Light 110,  Golfe de Juan Light 316.5,  La Fourmigue Light 172.   Ships present include USS TELFAIR (APA-210) and USS WALDO COUNTY (LST 1163).   SOPA is Commanding Officer, USS TELFAIR (APA-210).   0816 Secured the Special Sea and Anchor detail.   1000 Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples.   Conditions:  Normal.

12-16  Anchored as before.   1240 Pursaunt to orders of the Commanding Officer, Ltjg Julius N. Balog, USNR departed for temporary additional duty as Shore Patrol Officer.   1500 Set the Anchor Detail.   Commenced maneuvering at various speeds to form lee. 1544 Secured the Anchor Detail.

16-20  Anchored as before.   1640 WARNER, D.(n), SA, of ACB-2 was injured when hit bay another man with a coffee cup receiving a wound, lacerated, occipital regaion, no A or N involvement.    Treatment:  Cleansed, three (3) 4-0 black silk sutures, dry dressing.   Witnesses:  None.   Disposition: Returned to duty.

00-04 Anchored in PCV Anchorage, St. Florent, Corsica, in 14 fathoms of water, rock bottom, with 40 fathoms of chain out to the port anchor, on the following bearings:   Pte. de Curza 118.5, Mt. Genova 184.5, Mt. Robbia 218. Condition of Readiness IV and Material Condition YOKE (Modified) are set. Engineering is on fifteen (15) minute standby for getting underway.   Boiler Number One (1) and Generators One (1) and Two (2) are on the line. Ships present include various unites of Task Force 61.    SOPA and OTC is Commanding Officer, USS FREMONT (APA-44).

04-08 Anchored as before.   0730 Set the Ballast Detail.    Commenced ballasting.    0740 While working in well deck, CHBOSN J.A. FRIEL, received a contusion and abrasion to the second toe of the left foot when wheel of fork lift passed over his foot.   Treatment:   taped and ice packs, administrated by BRYAN, HMC, USN.  Disposition: Returned to duty.   0745 Mustered the crew at quarters.   Absentees: None.

08-12   Anchored as before.   0803 Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples.    Conditions: Normal. 0829 Lowered stern gate.    0920 ACU-2's LCM8 #1 and #6 entered the well.    0928 Lost AC power.   0935 Power restored.   0950 LCU 1609 entered the well.   1028 LCU 1608 entered the well. Commenced deballasting.    1040 Closed the stern gate.    1116 Lighted fires under Number Two (2) boiler.   1153 Completed deballasting.    Draft: 17'0" fwd, 18'0" aft.

12-16 Anchored as before.    1303 LCU 1469 alongside to starboard.   Set the Refueling Detail.   1310 Commenced refueling LCU 1469 with Aviation gasoline.    1445 Completed refueling; 3400 gls of gasoline transferred to LCU 1469.   Secured the Refueling Detail. 1449 LCU 1469 cast off.   1512 Set the Special Sea and Anchor Detail.   Made preparations to get underway.    1525 Completed all preparations for getting underway.   Draft: 17'0" fwd, 18'0" aft.    1531 Underway in accordance with CTF 61 OP-ORDER 50-62 reroute from St. Florent, Corsica to rendezvous with USS POCONO (AGC-16), OOD at the conn, Captain and Navigator on the bridge.   Maneuvering at various courses and speeds to clear anchorage.    1536 c/s to 8 kts. 1543 Set course 009, 8 kts. 1551 Went to General Quarters.    1557 c/c to 090.

CTF 61 in USS POCONO (AGC-16) assumed SOPA and OTC. 0650 Slipping from wing wall ladder, WEYER, D.P., EN3, USN, caught left leg in tire hanging into well deck, spraining left knee at 1650 24 October 1962. Treatment administered by hospital corpsman. Disposition: Placed on sick list.

De Curza 119,  Little Pte. de Curza 138,  point west of beach 200.    Condition of Readiness IV and Material Condition YOKE (Modified) are set.   Engineering is on fifteen (15) minute standby for getting underway.   Boiler Number Two (2) and Generators Number One (1) and Two (2) are on the line.    Ships present include various units of Task Force 61 plus French LST BIDASSOA
(L 9004) and USS CHEWAUCAN (AG-50),  SOPA and OTC is CTF 61 in USS POCONO (AGC-16).

04-08  Anchored as before.   0745 Mustered crew at quarters.   Absentees:  None.

08-12  Anchored as before.   0845 Made daily inspection of magazines and smokeless powder samples.   Conditions:   Normal.   Made weekly test of magazine sprinkling systems.    Test:  Satisfactory.    1012 While scrapping lye from the bottom of a bucket, GUISBERG, L.(n),  MM1, USN,  received a burn of both eyes when lye flew into his eyes.   Treatment:  Thoroughly flushed with water, normal saline and diluted vinegar.    Boric acid ophalmic ointment applied and dark glasses.    Disposition:   Limited duty for 24 hours.

12-16  Anchored as before.   1245 Set the Refueling Detail.   1325 USS CHEWAUCAN (AOG-50) moored to port side of this ship, with standard mooring lines.   1404 Commenced pumping Avgas.   1408 Commenced pumping NSFO.    1425 Commenced pumping JP-5.    1453 Completed pumping Avgas; received 3574 gallons.
1503 Completed pumping JP-5;  received 5481 gallons.

16-18 Anchored as before.   1616 Completed pumping NSFC; received 26947 gallons.    Draft upon completion of fueling:  fwd 19'2",  aft 16'6",  mean 17'10".   1745 USS CHEWAUCAN (AOG-50 underway from alongside.
